The occasion was made possible by the fact that the distinguished
intemational theological journal Concilium decided to hold its editorial
board meeting in the United States in order to celebrate the republica
tion by The Seabury Press ofthe English-speaking issue ofthejournal
after a lapse of two yearsSince Concilium was founded twelve years
ago to continue the WOrk ofVatican IIthe symbolic and hopeful concil
iar theme of the colloquium seemed entirely appropriate to the many
participants
At the instigation of Andrew MGreeleya member of the board of
Conciliumand MsgrJohn JEgan of Notre DameS Center for
Pastoral and Social Ministrythe plans for the meeting were initiated in
the summer of 1976Hans Kling and Johann BMetzrepresenting the
board of Conciliumand David Tracyas president of the Catholic
Theological Society of Americajoined Greeley and Egan in the exten
sive planning for the session
After several discussionsthe agenda described below emerged as
