UCLA HISTORY
The University of California had been established at that
time, 1868, in northern California at Berkeley, across the
Bay from San Francisco. Los Angeles area students who
wanted to attend the state university had to go 500 miles
from home. Even so, by 1910 there were more freshmen
on the Berkeley campus from Los Angeles than there were
from San Francisco.
Southern Californians, however, wanted a state-support-
ed, four-year college in their area. Their campaign for
such a school, however, was resisted by most of the Uni-
versity of California s regents and by the state s governor

Angeles Herald-Express. He was also a university regent.

the Los Angeles State Normal School.

okaying the opening of a \"Southern Branch of the Uni-
versity of California.\" The two-year school, which would
