里昂?尤里斯（1924—2003年），1924年8月3日出生于美国巴尔的摩一个波兰犹太移民家庭。第二次世界大战爆发后，他中学未毕业即参加了美国海军，在南太平洋区域从事无线电报务工作。1945年因患疟疾退役。1950年后成为职业小说家。著有《出埃及记》《爱尔兰往事》等作品。前者出版后成为全球畅销书，被翻译为多种语言，并于1960年改编为由保罗?纽曼主演、奥托?普雷明格导演的电影，于1971年改编为百老汇同名音乐剧。他的至理名言是：“不能征服孤独，就不能成为名家；不能封闭对现实世界的爱恨，深陷其中则一事无成。作家的世界只有写作，这无疑是在付出过高的代价；我无法确定这是否为一种极端的自私或泯灭人性的本能，但除非能将最伟大的爱埋没，否则你将不可能在数年时间里聚焦你所从事的写作。”里昂?尤里斯于2003年6月21日因肾衰竭去逝，享年79岁。
