Ian Daley lives with his father, mother, and older brother on a dairy farm in upstate Vermont, the north country. Times are hard for small farmers in the region. They get even harder when a winter ice storm brings down the power lines, and stray voltage gets loose on the farm, randomly shocking humans and animals and disrupting the cows milking. Ians dad, who has always been gruff and noncommunicative, becomes morose. His mom becomes increasingly worn out, and finally one day, she goes away.
