mThere has never been a human generation that did not try to invest beauty and
symbolism into everyday objects. Quilting represents both goals??? for we seem to have
no samples of quilts or quiited objects or clothing that do not demonstrate this. For
example??? that most plebian of quilted objects??? the bed cover??? has graduated from its
original function of providing maximum warmth with minimum weight to a thing of
beauty incorporating a high degree of craftsmanship and meaning.
The stitching can be intricate and the fabric pieces joined in patchwork (with which
quilting is often combined) to provide visual attractiveness. But the special thing about
quilts is that they so often have real symbolism??? real meaning in a community or a
family or to an individual. Their patterns were (and are) often traditional??? handed down
through generations and regarded as special for weddings??? births??? and other important
occasions??? including community events. They even mat ked milestones in wars and
exploration.
Earlier generations that did not have the advantages of central heating cherished
quilts for their practicality. Today??? we do??? too??? but they have become decorative objects
as well. We hang antique and modern quilts??? and we make more that we hope will
be treasured by our descendants. Just as in other areas we ve broken many of our
links with the past??? we have taken the freedom to experiment with new uses for this
ancient craft.
So in this book of projects we not only go far afield from traditional patterns in bed
quilts??? but we ve adapted the technique to a whole new range of objects some purely
practical that we ve made pretty as well??? and some that say??? ~_dmire me. I m handsome
