内容简介

His hair was mostly white??? and his belb
protruded over the top of his breeches. Climbing a fligh\"
of stairs left him breathless. His left heel constantly paine~
him??? and every old scar in his body was the seat of agon3
Jn the damp??? chilly sea winds of Boston.
He lay on top of the covers in the giant bed in his roomt
in the Cromwell s Head??? an inn in the north end o:
Boston. He had been drunk the night before and the night
before that. He rubbed his hand on his chin and felt thc
growth of whiskers. It was clear to him that he had been
drunk for several nights prior to the last two as well.
His head lay propped against the carved oak backboard
of his bed. His fine linen shirt was opened to just above
his navel. He stared down at his chest and rounded belly.
The hair on his chest had turned white as well. He
knew that the white descended even further and that that
part of him didn t work anymore. He wondered ff the
white on his head indicated that his brain had gone soft as
well.
He raised his hand to his forehead and groaned. \"Damn
belly! It looks like I m seven months gone???\" he said half
aloud.
He remembered that last night--~r was it the night
before?--there had been a girl??? a pretty young thing from
the taproom below. He didn t want to remember??? but
vaguely he recalled the embarrassment of not being able
to perform. He had paid her well anyway. Maybe that
would keep her mouth shut.
