1841年4月29日，一名默默无闻的诗人在巴黎辞世了，他的葬礼不像同时代的雨果那样赢得全国举哀，万人空巷；跟随灵柩的只有孤零零的一位友人。当时风雨交加，在墓地上念祷文的神甫不等棺材抬到便径自离去。这位寂寞的诗人只活了三十四岁。他的传世之作在友人的帮助下于死后次年才得以出版……他就是《夜之卡斯帕尔》的作者路易?贝尔特朗。1807年出生于意大利，7岁时移居于法国的第戎。早年曾赴巴黎，进入雨果、诺第埃等人的文艺沙龙，受到热烈欢迎。本可指望从此脱颍而出，怎奈他生性孤傲，加之贫病交加，羞求于人，不久便返乡。后来写过若干论战性的文章，还写过歌舞剧，但都未成功，结果还是湮没无闻。后来再赴巴黎，其时已身患肺病。他孤傲的性格使他拒绝友人的帮助，在他临终之时只剩下雕塑家大卫?当热这一位朋友。他始终惦记着他的《夜之卡斯帕尔》。这部作品屡遭出版商的拒绝，最后虽被接受，但一直拖延不出。最终贝尔特朗来不及看到此书出版便撒手人寰。

《夜之卡斯帕尔》后来出版带来的影响是巨大的，可谓开法国现代散文诗之先河。波德莱尔曾说，他是看了二十遍《夜之卡斯帕尔》之后才写他的《巴黎的忧郁》；尼采也从《夜之卡斯帕尔》中得到启示；魏尔伦、兰波、马拉美、艾吕雅、纪德等人多少都受到它的影响。
