内容简介

Lutfullah belonged to a distinguished Sufi family of Malwa. But his family lost its fortunes, and Lutfullah travelled to Baroda, Ujjain, Gwalior, and Agra, before reaching Delhi in 1817. He found odd jobs in the course of his extensive travels, but, more importantly, he developed a reputation as a teacher of Arabic, Persian, and some Indian languages, notably Marathi. Lutfullah visited England in 1844 in the company of Mir Jafar Ali Khan, son-in-law of the Nawab of Surat. He wrote his Autobiography in English which records his observations on various matters connected with British Government, culture, and society. The book was originally published in London in 1857 and is acclaimed to be not only the first, but also the best, autobiography by an Indian in English. In the same genre as Mirza Abu Taleb Khan s autobiographical account of his travels to the West, it is interesting to note that even though Lutfullah visited Britain almost half-a-century after Abu Taleb, yet they ten d to speak the same language, use the same methods of argument and reasoning, and adhere to identical or similar notions of what religion is all about. The volume will have a substantial introduction and annotations by Mushirul Hasan.
